I think it's more the fact that other popular games, at the time Starcraft I and CS 1.6 / CS:S had the likes of Steam (since 2003 afaik) and which was well before 2000. If anything, if there were as little tournament and stream support in duel as there is in TDM and CTF now - QL would be much more dead. I have no idea what side of the bed you got up from this morning, but preaching that duel being popular has killed Quake is just ridiculous. LoL and CS that you're naming have a lot of money in it due to the business model they have, the marketing they have and the far greater level of development they have compared to your smaller tiny-dev-team games. the entire game, y'know?).ĭis, if you kept Level Up going with TDM streams etc, I have no doubt the activity would be more intense than it is now. QL isn't dying because people supported duel, QL is fading away because of a lack of modern multiplayer game features that should support all modes (like. Of course it would be nice if there was an Alexey A equivalent dedicated to financially supporting team modes, but it's not like it would help that much considering the lack of development in the game. It can be annoying in duel sometimes, but it's not quite as cringeworthingly painful to wait for. I love watching TDM and CTF but I absolutely hate waiting around for 8 people to coordinate themselves with little to no concern for how long they're taking. I'd say part of the problem for team games is that there has been no strict rules or administration of any of the events. TDM and CTF teams often wildcard matches in leagues, they're often late for their games, they don't organise their servers completely till an hour after their scheduled match. I think it's cool that Enjoy & Koziol like to stream some TDM when they can, but there's few other people out there making a big effort to stream team matches (props to the Russian streamers though!). Why are there so few TDM and CTF streamers these days. I'd say that the lack of proper team support and infrastructure in the game and lack of spectator friendly team-viewing options lead to the decline of team games in Quake. I wouldn't say duel being popular has anything to do with it killing QL. even the dead/failing team leagues a few years ago had vastly more players participating than QL had at any point in duel.Īlso we're talking about things that happened ~15 years ago, it's obvious some people in this thread have no understanding of what happened besides the few things they have gathered from the forums they have all just gone away (and the numbers are far superior to those that play duel now, or ever played), and only ones left are the duellers. just because there is a handful of (serious) quakers left and they play duel while all the other competitive modes are dead, doesnt mean all the quakers in the history of time like duel. You simply fail to grasp the big picture here. it's obvious you werent there or even have any knowledge of the history, or simply fail to understand it. after the hype/activity died, quake never recovered. vast majority of quake players played teammodes _always_, until the steep decline in activity after the initial hype of the duel scene. Something with an objective that sets a focus on the viewpoint. I hate every one of you duel only supporters that killed my game.ĭuel should actually be removed completely and the development team for the next quake should focus around a single team mode. Just like LoL or CSGO are that are now killing it once a broader audience has access to watch. The major mistake id made was to listen to the community and focus on duel. Please all you duel supporters WAKE UP that YOU have killed quake. They all focus on duel and they all FAIL. Think of every arena shooter that has been made off the back of Quake.

Most don't want the insane pressure of everything being down to them. Most people have an ability to be social.

It was because it was all focused on duel. But did anybody really think why? Was it really because it was a buggy game? No. We all mocked painkiller because nobody wanted to play it. Having a shitty stream every weekend showcasing the same 20 players will not build a game. But in reality it’s just like the ballon d'or in football. Two of the best players fighting it out so we can name a BEST INDIVIDUAL PLAYER. Sure we all enjoy the show-piece of duel. No interest means no further development. The intelligent few among us have been saying for maybe a decade or more that focusing on duel was a mistake.

LoL has shown the world that team games are where it's at, but hey we didn't even need that. Can we finally accept that listening to organisers who wanted to reduce costs, and the money hungry egos of a few top players all demanding duel was the way forward, COMPLETELY and UTTERLY KILLED the game?!
